BSSc Year 4 students have designed 12 pieces of “tactical furniture” tailor-made for social housing and sub-divided flats, as part of the coursework for ARCH 4115 Architectural Design Studio V. Led by professors Patrick Hwang, Sebastian Law, Tsou Jin Yeu and T. C. Yuet, this creative project requires 60 students to design and make practical, multi-purpose furniture within a space of 45cm x 70cm, such as a bed that can be folded into a dining table or a wardrobe that can be transformed into a workspace. It aims to explore the possibilities of furniture design in improving the living quality of the underprivileged, which corresponds to the larger commitment of the School to make an impact on society through meaningful, innovative design.
In collaboration with the Society for Community Organisation, an exhibition of these works has been organised with the participation of 12 social housing families, who have tried out and commented on the furniture prototypes. The students will improve their designs based on suggestions from the residents, with the hope that their “tactical furniture” can be put into mass production in 2019 for the everyday benefit of the grassroots community.
