“To teach architecture is to practice architecture; to practice architecture is to teach it”.

“Vice versa” is an exhibition of the work of Condition_Lab, a collective of architects, and academics who wish to challenge the idea of how we practice architecture today.

Conditions are a lens, that allows us to read the world around us, a lens that focuses on people. Blurring the lines between teaching, research and practice is at the core of vice versa, a Latin phrase meaning “the other way around”.

The other way around means to put people ahead of form, to listen before proposing, and to help before building. Making is our “modus operandi”: models, drawings, prototypes and buildings - we feel comfortable when we make. Making establishes a connection between people and vice versa.

Inspired by the anthropologist Tim Ingold claim that “To teach anthropology is to practice anthropology; to practice anthropology is to teach it”, Condition_Lab aspires to generate a reading of architecture that substitutes the word architecture for anthropology.
