In scenes of teaching, art is often called upon to act as an ideal for architecture: a state to which it can aspire. In commercial practice, its role is more modest. When can art be understood not as a handmaiden, but as an antagonist or adversary of architecture? What might a history of the relationship between art and architecture present, if it doesn’t assume a harmonious relationship?

Marc Angélil is a renowned architect and urban designer, Professor Emeritus at ETH Zurich. Angélil has taught at prestigious institutions including Harvard University and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. His own teaching has continuously sought out art’s capacity to productively interrupt and illuminate architectural deduction.
