This lecture is a supposition about urban design and how, by examining a fragment within the greater whole, we have opportunities to enable positive change. The public realm is more than just about traffic, land use and buildings. Our intention is to question why and how all this surface textures respond to its ground, not just what is on it, or how to treat it as a blank canvas, but what is under and above it? Ultimately, this ground will be inhabited by a variety of ecologies and it is already etched with stories for us to engender, empower and enrich. It is an ecology of place that we – as designers – can conceptualise to inspire the creative and intellectual potential of our society.
Deborah Kuhis an internationally recognized designer with over fifteen years of experience specialising in inter and trans-disciplinary urban design, master planning, architecture, landscape architecture, interpretation and furniture design. She has taught design studios at The University of Western Australia (UWA), Curtin University of Technology, and the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology (RMIT). She is currently an urban policy-maker at the Development Bureau of Hong Kong government.
