This lecture discusses the unique dilemma of the Xiqu Centre, which stems from the introverted programme requirements of the art form of Chinese opera, while being situated at a prime harbour site of the West Kowloon Cultural District with an MTR connection. The internal configuration of the project is therefore driven by the decision to lift the Grand Theatre – the heart of the Xiqu Centre – off the ground. This further creates a large courtyard plaza below that welcomes visitors to a distinctive meeting place in the neighbourhood, as well as a quiet space suitable for Chinese opera above.
Earle Briggsis the Managing Director of Revery Architecture (formerly Bing Thom Architects) in Hong Kong. He has particular expertise in the design and construction of complex cultural building types, coordinating diverse interest groups and delivering projects with distinct design integrity.
Giles Hallis an Architect at Revery Architecture. His expertise ranges from concepts through detailing and construction administration. He has been a key member of several prominent projects at the firm, such as leading the Grand Theatre within the Xiqu Centre Opera House.
