It is essential to consolidate the concepts of “social enterprise” and “social entrepreneurship” in order to understand how social innovation operates. These concepts are all grounded in a human-centred approach and along a business direction. A social enterprise is born out of the learning of different social issues and the corresponding social problems behind. Throughout the learning process, the pathway leading to social innovation is developed. The potential of social innovation is enormous when more actors from diverse sectors are encouraged to participate, such as an architect with an inclusive mindset.
Iris Chanis the in-charge of the ACT Social Awareness (ACT), a training and education arm under the Social Enterprise Business Centre, the Hong Kong Council of Social Service (HKCSS). This arm aims to drive social change and advocate social innovation. ACT is a social enterprise focusing on building social awareness in various sectors under different campaigns, including Future Camp, HKCSS-Citi Community Intern Programme, Social Innovation, Community 4.0 Competition and Social Awareness school programme and corporate training. Chan received her MPhil from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and MSc in I.T. in Education from the University of Hong Kong. Previously, she served as Policy & Research Officer at HKCSS and Research Officer at CUHK with focuses on social development, health education and civic engagement.
