After completing his PhD in 2014, Jason embarked on a mapping workshop tour across China. He brought his architectural students into urban villages, informal markets and slums to map out the urban poor’s daily resourcefulness, hoping that his students will discover the humane aspect of architecture. Jason believes that all stakeholders should be taken into consideration during the design process, and that a good design is one capable of constructing dignity for all, including the urban poor. In this lecture, Jason will explain why dignity matters to everyone through a three-year fresh market project.
Jason Hois an architect, curator and educator. He is the founder of Mapping Workshop, and the director of FEI Arts Museum in Guangzhou. He has taught and researched at many universities across the globe, including RMIT University, the University of Hong Kong, the University of Pennsylvania, etc. Jason is currently an associate professor at the School of Architecture at South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, and holds an adjunct position at the School of Architecture and Urban Design at RMIT University, Melbourne.
