From a tectonic and symbolic perspective illustrated by some of the projects of Atelier Deshaus, this lecture elaborates on how structure can play an ontological role in shaping the intrinsic quality of architecture (primitivity and poetry of space, the modernity of the interior, etc.), in line with the roles of other elements, such as site, light and surface.


Liu Yichungraduated from Tongji University with a Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) degree in 1991 and a Master of Architecture degree in 1997. He worked for Guangzhou Design Institute during 1991-94, and was the chief architect of Tongji Architectural Design Institute from 1998 to 2000. Liu is currently a partner and principal architect of Atelier Deshaus, which he co-founded with Zhuang Shen and Chen Yifeng in 2001. He is also a visiting professor at the College of Architecture and Urban Planning of Tongji University and the School of Architecture of Southeast University.
