"Concept follows circularity" is an ongoing research into the life cycle of interiors, from program of requirements to end of use, in order to gain a better insight into the unruly practice of connecting the dots...

Realising circular designs is challenging when implementing in a linear world. Financial systems, building regulations and the organisation of materials and waste flows still require reinvention, while we are quickly running out of time and resources. Where theoretical models of circularity can be formulated with precision, reality is complex and full of obstacles. Therefore, the method of interviewing and thorough investigation of (best-practice) cases has been chosen to map out successful solutions, sometimes inventive and creative, other times utterly practical. The aim is to equip designers with more knowledge of the various phases and ready-to-implement skills for improved circular designs. One of the cases presented in the lecture is Nationale-Nederlanden, a 37,000 sqm office renovation, executed with high ambitions of circularity and Zero Waste.

Marieke van den Heuvelgraduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven (1999), followed by a scholarship at Benetton’s Fabrica in Treviso (Italy, 2000) and a master of Cultural and Social Anthropology at VU University Amsterdam (2006). After gaining experience at Inside Outside (Petra Blaisse) and OMA/AMO, she co-founded MANN, a creative consultancy office. Her approach to design is intrinsically interdisciplinary and combines spatial design with research and strategy. She specialises in the development of circular design approaches for interior architecture. Currently, she is working on "the not-so-easy-guide to a circular interior", which will be published in mid-2023.

The lecture will be conducted in English. For non-CUHK participants, please register here.
