In this lecture, Murray Fraser will reflect on the task of editing the 21st Edition of Banister Fletcher's Global History of Architecture, the most comprehensive survey to date of architecture in all parts of the world over the last 5,500 years in the form of 102 chapters written by 88 subject experts. As a total rewriting of a long-standing 'classic' book that was first published in 1896, the new edition needed to rethink what a global survey means today. Thus, the 21st Edition provides a worldwide overview of architectural history for an age of globalisation in an account which is presented as being open, relative, networked, and provisional.

Murray Fraser is Professor of Architecture and Global Culture at UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture, and former-Chair of the Society of Architectural Historians GB. He is General Editor of the 21st Edition of Sir Banister Fletcher’s Global History of Architecture (2020), awarded the SAHGB’s Colvin Prize. He also received the 2018 RIBA Annie Spink Award.
