This lecture investigates the role of drawing, and of the drawing, as the basis of a pure theoretical construction in architecture. Common sense regards drawing as a tool through which an idea is expressed and represented, therefore, as a conventional system of notation that succeeds the idea. Herein drawing is seen as a general concept capable of establishing the bases and the governing principles for a comprehensive idea of architecture. The drawing’s theoretical character will be contextualised through the works of Giovanni Battista Piranesi, De Stijl, and digital artist Manfred Mohr. In particular, this lecture will discuss in depth the work of A Hypothesis of Architecture by the Italian architect and theorist Franco Purini.
