Speakers Tat Lam and Kan Chan

Tat Lam (BSSc 2005) and Kan Chan (MArch 2013) both founded start-up practices in Hong Kong, yet their projects have taken them beyond the city into the international sphere, reaching remote regions across continents through architectural design, urban planning and data technologies. In this lecture, they will share the challenges of expanding their work across geographical and cultural borders, and how they have benefited personally and professionally from this “outbound” experience.

Dr Tat Lamfounded Shanzhai City after working in urban and social developments with Urbanus in China. Now, he is developing social finance models based on data technologies, targeting grassroots communities in developing regions in China, South America, Southeast Asia and Africa. Tat received his MArch from Columbia University and PhD from UCL, with a research interest in urban innovation and entrepreneurship.

Kan Chanfounded Aravia in 2015, and has since designed and executed more than 20 projects, exploring the impact of architecture on the public realm through spatial design and masterplanning. In 2017, Aravia won a design competition for Jinan Metro City in Shandong Province, a transit-oriented development of over 2 million sq.m. in China. Prior to Aravia, Kan designed projects for a China investment group in East Africa.
