Architecture is based on relationships. Zhang Ming seeks to foreground relationships that emerge from the project, instead of imposing order onto it. As such, his approach is similar to that of a Chinese literary form known as 散文 (essay), which structure is open and casual, allowing for unexpected and variegated results. This lecture shows a series of architectural projects that uses this free-flowing approach, privileging multiplicity of experiences over singularity and objecthood. It offers a new model that embraces the transitory nature of architecture: its changes, its growth, its atrophy, and its revitalisation.

Zhang Mingis Professor at Tongji University’s College of Architecture and Urban Planning, specialising in Architectural Design and Theory. A Class 1 Registered Architect in China, Zhang is also Principal Architect at Shanghai-based Original Design Studio of Tongji University’s Architectural Design and Research Institute. Among his notable built works are Fan Zeng Art Gallery in Jiangsu Province and the Power Station of Art in Shanghai. Over the years, Zhang has received more than 60 design awards, with creative projects featured in a number of international design exhibitions, including La Triennale di Milano (2012) and Busan International Architectural Culture Festival (2017).
