Architecture plays a significant role in shaping the built environment of our cities. Buildings and public spaces often create a variety of urban conditions that affect our perceptions of the city in symbolic or anonymous ways. Through analysing the restoration project of the iconic Pirelli Tower in Milan, we shall discuss how architecture brings significant impact to the city's brand development and place identity. We also wish to raise awareness of the importance of preserving modern architecture heritage, especially in places like Hong Kong where the conservation and adaptive re-use of such types of buildings could provide an opportunity to enrich the city's urban renewal plans. The event is part of the celebration of the Italian Research Day established in 2019 by the Italian Ministry of Education, Universities and Research.

During the conference, the impact of the social and cultural dimensions on building technology in contemporary architectural practice and the history of architecture will be discussed. It interrogates the history of building technology and its relation to the history of technology and cultural history (Theme 1). It looks at the current architectural practice, questioning how dominant social forces and conventions define and direct technological and material choices in design (Theme 2). We invite discussions on the relationship between technology and culture, focusing on the Asia-Pacific region since the 1970s.
