PhD Symposium 2023

Date 26 April, 28 April 2023

Location CUHK School of Architecture; Zoom

How could human-centered architecture be sustainable? By addressing this key question, the 2023 PHD symposium discusses architectural design from various research perspectives. Managing and understanding local users and their needs in built environmental issues has been given increased attention in recent decades, but rigorous examination into social, economic and environmental sustainability is still not apparent. The significance of both sustainable and human-centered design is gradually shown in socio-spatial concerns, such as climate change, ageing population , social inequality, and the regeneration of both urban and rural areas. How do we acknowledge the dynamics of stakeholders in the intricate urban or rural fabric? How do we consider the full life cycle of a space where many important stages of socio-economic exchanges occur and evolve? How do we balance sustainability and convenience, usability, cost and others during a design practice? New methods and concepts such as robotic assistance, digital optimisation, community empowerment and participatory design are rising, and this symposium hopes to provoke discussion by examining the above issues and solutions in the field.

The 2023 PhD Symposium is organised by the Research Postgraduate Students at the School of Architecture in collaboration with Polimi (Politecnico di Milano), and is open to teachers and students in relevant fields from CUHK and other educational institutions. This symposium has been structured into five sessions to map the many facets of research approaches, namely, Construction/ Building Technologies, Urban Studies, Socio-cultural Studies, Digital Optimization, and Rural Regeneration.
