This course explores the histories of urbanism and the competing forces that shape city design and their social environments. Students will be introduced to seminal urban theories and recent discourses in architecture, planning, landscape architecture, and urban design to analyze various urban processes and their impacts on local communities. Discussion throughout the course will engage with questions related to contemporary urbanisation and consider how historical knowledge can impart a better understanding of the challenges that we face in today’s globalised context.
