Project Plum Grove: Revitalising Mui Tsz Lam with Experimental Restorations

Led by Professor Thomas Chung, this project formulated restoration proposals for revitalising the 400-year-old Hakka village of Mui Tsz Lam. Three built heritages (Old House, Auxiliary Block, Mural House) in the village were targeted. At one site, an open-air living Hakka culture gallery was created by adopting local rammed earth reconstruction. At the other site, a countryside living experiential centre was designed to test alternative sustainable restoration and co-create a multi-purpose community space. Through collaboration with villagers and the general public, the project hopes to regenerate a place by reconnecting its people. It also acts as a feasibility study for comprehensive village-wide restoration work.
