This project addresses the regeneration of Pui O through establishing a Hakka craftsmanship centre. It is hoped that the cultural identity of the Hakkas can be rebuilt through the recultivation of abandoned farmland and reintroduction of traditional Hakka craftsmanship. The project extends the existing ritual path in Pui O, injecting new programs – pavilions in woodlands, farming huts in farmlands and craftsmanship centre in village that regenerates the village holistically. The project transforms traditional Hakka housing typology (row houses) into a new language where zones are defined by thick walls whereas having buffer zones between different programs to bring the craftsmen, villagers and visitors together.
