The term “vernacular” is often associated with “tradition”. Yet in the villages of New Territories nowadays, many traditional Chinese buildings are replaced by self-built metal houses. These houses, though often neglected, do reflect the daily lives of the villagers to a certain extent. Can they be defined as an alternative form of vernacular architecture? Focusing on Lung Yeuk Tau, this project reinterprets the language and typology of the self-built metal houses, hoping to revitalize and redefine the characteristics of contemporary villages.
