Built elements of the Humble Administrator’s Garden in Suzhou are arranged in such a way that creates an illusionary sense of distance and scale. Inspired by the Garden, this observatory project takes on the challenge to create a journey through the rocks, capturing the illusionary visual effects of rocks found on the naturally formed rocky shore on Grass Island.

Thin metal frames of various width-to-height ratios were inserted to the rocky shore as handrails (guide of path) and viewing frames (guide of vision). They are inserted at the exact points where when one looks through the frames, one can experience a false sense of distance among the rocks.
