IN – BETWEEN THE REEF” – Integration Of Living And Oystering Through The Medium Space

2022-23 MArch 2

Supervisor: Prof. Simon HSU, Prof. Sebastian LAW

The project aims to explore the integration of the Lau Fau Shan oystering industry, housing, and the local community within mixed-use towers, resulting in a neighborhood that honors and revitalises the oystering tradition. The design of the towers draws inspiration from the organic curve of the oyster shell. The lower levels of the towers will accommodate oystering systems, nurseries, and processing facilities, while the upper levels will be designated for residential purposes. This integration creates spaces that highlight the ecological and social interconnectedness of aquaculture, providing both local residents and tourists with educational opportunities to appreciate sustainable seafood production.

About the Course

Course: MArch Design Studio - Medium Scale: Reimagining Collectivity in Hong Kong Housing

In 2020, Hong Kong witnessed the construction of over 2 million square meters of built space, with more than 1.3 million square meters allocated for domestic use. This domestic area exceeded the non-domestic area by almost double. However, despite the significant construction, the housing crisis in Hong Kong persists. The majority of the 1.3 million square meters of domestic projects comprise large, single-phase residential developments that rival the size of small towns. These projects predominantly fall into two design scales: the extra-large scale, characterized by the dominance of tower and podium typologies in the housing landscape, and the extra-small scale, where intricate unit layouts serve to maximize saleable area while minimizing the imagination of habitation. Neither of these scales effectively addresses the notions of collectivity and communal living that we define as the medium scale. This studio aims to perceive architecture as an active participant in shaping communal living. It prompts us to contemplate how we coexist with others and what spaces define us as a community. By exploring these questions, the studio seeks to challenge the prevailing design paradigms and envision new approaches that foster a sense of collectivity and communal aspiration in housing.
