“Mobile City Lab 2022: Co-Creating Livable and Healthy Places” consists of a two-week exhibition at the atrium of the Central Market, and two forums discussing the present countryside regeneration in Hong Kong, cultural heritage conservation of the South Lantau Island, and the development for islands of Hong Kong and abroad.

In the past ten years, the Chinese University of Hong Kong has practised transdisciplinary research, teaching and learning in the urban realm, bearing wonderful fruits for sharing and further exploration.

In 2012, the Department of Geography and Resource Management and the School of Architecture jointly organised an interdisciplinary undergraduate Urban Studies Programme, aiming to train future urban leaders equipped with sustainability thinking and problem-solving skills. In that same year, the Master of Urban Design Programme was set up to nurture future urban designers, who would contribute to building economically vibrant, liveable, sustainable and socially just cities. The Institute of Future Cities was then established in 2014, positioning itself as a multidisciplinary research hub, a teaching and learning platform as well as a knowledge transfer centre.

Over the years, our colleagues and students have engaged in research, teaching and learning vigorously, turning our city into a co-learning and knowledge co-creation space – as a Mobile City Laboratory. Students, teachers, professionals and local communities have continued to discuss multifaceted urban issues collectively, cultivating place-based knowledge and deepening multifarious understanding.
