Architecture is a broadcast medium, a low-definition form of communication, and a faint signal surrounded by a blizzard of noise – information overload, distraction and a superabundance of channels are the cultural backdrop of our lives. How can the design of the built environment communicate, create space and focus attention in the age of accelerated signals, feeds and streams? This lecture shares recent projects by Höweler + Yoon Architecture, ranging from memorials and submersibles to buildings that explore these questions.

Eric Höweleris currently an Associate Professor in Architecture at Harvard GSD, as well as Principal of Höweler + Yoon Architecture, a creative studio co-founded with his wife, J. Meejin Yoon, in 2005. His innovative, interdisciplinary design and research work investigate the intersections between architecture and building technologies with a focus on envelopes and material systems. He is author of Skyscraper: Vertical Now (Rizzoli/Universe 2003) and co-author of 1,001 Skyscrapers (Princeton Architectural Press 2000). Höweler received both his Bachelor of Architecture (with AIA Henry Adams Certificate) and Master of Architecture degrees from Cornell University.
