The (Un)Realism of Computer Game Spaces, looks at concepts in art, architecture, and computer graphics through the lens of computer games. Hong Kong is one of the most commonly recreated cities in computer games, but what does it mean to ‘recreate’ a place in a computer game? Can digital archeology preserve a site digitally? And what does it mean for a computer game space to be ‘realistic’ Dr Nelson will examine these questions from a theoretical and practical perspective.

Dr. Peter Nelson is an Assistant Professor in fine art, media studies, computer games, and creative technology with a background as a practicing artist. His first book ‘Computer Games as Landscape Art’ (Palgrave Macmillan 2023) considers how first-person shooter computer games can be understood through the art historical lens of landscape, and his recent papers examine questions such as realism in the age of computer-simulated images, and the role of AI in digital creative processes. His technical areas of expertise are painting, drawing, 3D modeling, animation, fabrication, and interactivity. He exhibits ink paintings with HanArt TZ Gallery, Hong Kong, and regularly collaborates with violinist, technologist, and theorist Roberto Alonso Trillo.
