The environment is the space where we live, constituted by both nature and human beings. Through overreach and neglect, humankind has diverged from nature by claiming more and more territory across the planet. “Architecture” first originated as a shelter for humans to protect themselves against nature, and this definition still holds. Nowadays, the imbalance of human and nature calls for a radical transformation of the boundary separating the two.
We propose a different understanding and shaping of our surroundings to make living space for all. By expanding the potential of design and intertwining nature and architecture, we aim to discover a new idea of comfort for not only humans, but also other living beings.
Lily Zhangand Wataru Shinji practice in the United States, Japan, Hong Kong and Mainland China. They currently teach at the School of Architecture of The Chinese University of Hong Kong. Their work, teaching and research have led them to many places around the world, building on a diversity of experiences and perspectives on environmental conditions to expand their design practice. Lily earned her Master of Architecture degree from Princeton University, and her B.A. in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley. Wataru earned his B.A. in Architecture from the University of California, Berkeley.
