The lecture will explore the link between the quality of the built environment and its value, in health, social, economic and environmental terms. These links are increasingly vital as Governments around the world strive to create urban environments where populations can thrive and not simply survive. This notion is theorised as ‘place value’ which, alongside ‘place quality’, is conceptualised as existing within a virtuous loop in which quality dictates value and value defines quality.

Matthew Carmonais Professor of Planning and Urban Design at The Bartlett, University College London (UCL). He is an architect / planner with research focused on urban design governance, the design and management of public space, and the value of urban design. He Chairs the Place Alliance which campaigns for place quality in England.

The new lecture course “Environmental Design for Liveable and Healthy Cities” is open to all CUHK students and staff – you may join in person at CYT 203 (am sessions) or Lee Shau Kee Architecture Building Zone F (pm sessions) or via Zoom.
