Our recently established Design Talent Scholarship aims to support students with outstanding academic performance who demonstrate excellent design ability and potential in the field of architecture and urban design.

The Scholarship provides partial funding for tuition to selected applicants who are self-financed students enrolled in our Master of Science in Urban Design (MSUD) and Master of Architecture (MArch) programmes. We chat with two of this year's scholarship recipients, Martha Choi and Elisa Xu, who are both studying in the MSUD programme. Let's take a glimpse into their current study lives and experiences.

Why did you choose to study in Hong Kong?

M
: I chose Hong Kong because it is my place of birth and upbringing. Initially, I pursued studies in landscape studies, but my interests expanded to include history, conservation, social engagement, and place-making. Given Hong Kong's small size, opportunities for landscape projects seemed limited. However, I have come to appreciate the work of companies like One Bite Studio. I love storytelling, and I love site visits that inspire me with a human touch.

Problems always arise wherever there are people. We just have to solve the problems.
And now we are learning to solve problems through space. I have been contemplating the difference between space and place and how the sense of belonging operates. If I want to study about this city, then I should study in Hong Kong – that is a perfectly natural thing to do.

E: I am from Guangzhou. I chose to study in Hong Kong after completing my interior design studies in Australia and working in Hong Kong subsequently. My interests shifted towards site analysis, mapping, urban interiority, and urbanism in recent years. The decision to study in Hong Kong was driven by my desire to continue to work in Hong Kong or the Greater Bay Area in the future. I believe that studying here will allow me to establish professional connections and enhance my long-term career prospects. Additionally, my parents reside in Hong Kong and Guangzhou, making it appealing to live closer to them.

Personally, I prefer working in large firms on large-scale projects as they provide comprehensive and systematic training. Enrolling in the MSUD programme at CUHK allows me to delve into the macro scale, theory, and research aspects rather than solely focusing on design. Research has become a particular interest of mine.

The most impressive things about CUHK and the MSUD Programme?

M
: I actually joined the CUHK University Athletics Team – which is something I’ve always wanted to do! It is thrilling to enjoy campus life and connect with other young individuals and have fun, even though I am no longer an undergraduate student.

E: And I love the serene physical environment of the university. It fosters a sense of calmness and focus for academic pursuits. The impressive aspects of CUHK and the MSUD programme include the internationally profiled teaching faculty members who adopt a humanistic and bottom-up approach. During the admission interview, I was especially impressed by Jeroen (Programme Director of MSUD)'s down-to-earth and sincere attitude. It felt like he was genuinely interested in getting to know me as an individual, rather than just as an applicant, when he asked me questions. This experience resonated with the overall impression I have of CUHK and its people. The accommodating and flexible nature of the teachers is also admirable.

M: Indeed our teachers are incredibly considerate. They adapt their teaching methods and content to cater to students with diverse backgrounds and standards.

E: The internship program is also valuable, especially for non-local students, as it offers a rare opportunity to experience working in Hong Kong.

M: Personally I do believe this programme is suitable for anyone with a vision for the future of Hong Kong.

Receiving a scholarship…

E: It has been a tremendous help financially! Many of my former colleagues had to work for years before saving enough money to pursue a master's programme. I feel so privileged to have been endowed with this scholarship, allowing me to quickly immerse myself in student life again after completing my bachelor's degree..
