An anti-seismic earth house (i.e., Post-earthquake Reconstruction Demonstration Project of Guangming Village) built by the One University One Village (1U1V) team has received the Gold Award (Residential Category) at the HKIA Cross-Strait Architectural Design Symposium and Awards 2019.

The project was led by Prof. Edward Ng, Dr. Wan Li and PhD student Chi Xinan at the School of Architecture and carried out in collaboration with Dr. Emily So of the University of Cambridge and Prof. Bai Wenfeng of the Kunming University of Science and Technology. The team researched on the shortfalls of traditional rammed-earth buildings to formulate a new rammed-earth system, which demonstrated how traditional methods can be improved to provide villagers with safe, affordable, comfortable, and sustainable homes. The project realises one of the important goals of academic research – to contribute back to the community and help the needy through knowledge production.

The HKIA CADSA 2019 serves as a platform to recognise design excellence in Hong Kong, Macau, Mainland China and Taiwan that contributes to better living, economic advancement, social impact and knowledge production through creativity and innovation.
