“CU-Brick”, a research project by our Prof. Adam Fingrut in collaboration with Prof. Darwin Lau (CUHK Mechanical Automation Engineering) and Prof. Yeung Yam (CUHK Mechanical and Automation Engineering), has won the Silver Medal of the International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva.

As an automated robotic system with four primary components, the “CU-Brick” consists of a cable-driven parallel robot, an automated brick delivery system, a human-robot collaborated mortar application and a computational design framework. It can be mounted on a range of different environments, from metal frame structures to the walls and roofs of buildings. As the system automatically generates the structure to be built, the robot can be kept within the designed operational region, ensuring that the number and location of brick remain unchanged. It allows large-scale brick structures of complex geometry to be constructed due to its high levels of accuracy, efficiency and automation.

The International Exhibition of Inventions of Geneva is the largest global exhibition devoted exclusively to inventions. All the exhibited inventions have been evaluated by an international jury of specialists. This year, the virtual event showcased nearly 800 inventions from 25 countries and regions.
