CUHK architecture alumnus Solomon Cheung (MArch 2019) has received Second Prize and Honorable Mentions at the Young Architects Competitions and Quality City China Plan International Young Designers Competition, respectively.

For his project “The Hidden Oasis: The Luxury Villa in Riyadh”, Solomon proposes a conceptual luxury settlement camouflaged to match the historical surroundings in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Organic screens are set to enclose the settlement profiles, blending into the desert landscape. Forms of organic structure and rigid arrangement are incorporated to signify an integration of natural and artificial power. This proposal is awarded Second Prize at the Young Architects Competitions, which invites architects to design dwellings at the edge of Riyadh’s desert considering the new paradigms of living, encouraging design-related research with support from architectural firms such as Snøhetta, UN Studio, Foster + Partners, Sou Fujimoto Architects etc.

In “The Hidden Pavilion”, Soloman designed a prototype of street furniture to be installed in the Yulin Acropolis, one of the oldest and culturally richest cities in Shaanxi. The metallic surface reflects the surrounding environment and streetscape, while the translucent fabric screen with a lantern-like outlook creates a poetic aura. This proposal is awarded Honorable Mentions at the Quality City China Plan International Young Designers Competition, which is organised by the CBC Urban Regeneration Research Institute to explore innovative models of urban development in China.
