“The Post-earthquake Reconstruction Demonstration Project of Guangming Village” has received the Grand Award (New Buildings Category: Completed Projects – Residential Building) and a Special Citation on UN Sustainable Development Goals in this year’s Green Building Award. The project was led by Prof. Edward Ng, Dr. Wan Li and PhD student Chi Xinan at the School of Architecture, and carried out in collaboration with Dr. Emily So of the University of Cambridge and Prof. Bai Wenfeng of the Kunming University of Science and Technology. The team researched on the shortfalls of traditional rammed-earth buildings to formulate a new rammed-earth system, which demonstrated how traditional methods can be improved to provide villagers with safe, affordable, comfortable, and sustainable homes.
In addition, Prof. Ng’s research team, together with Dr. Ren Chao at HKU Faculty of Architecture and a few collaborating institutions, has won the Grand Award (Research & Planning Category) for the project “Urban Ventilation Assessment and Wind Corridor Plan for Chinese Cities”. The team developed a scientific methodology for city planners to design better ventilated cities for improving the quality of life of city dwellers. The method has been adopted by The State Council of the People’s Republic of China. Over 300 cities in China have been scheduled to incorporate the methodology in their next master planning cycle. Another project titled “Modern Bamboo Structure” by our PhD student Shao Changzhuan (supervised by Prof Ng), together with research teams at Tsinghua University, Chongqing University and Chongqing Jiaotong University, has also been honoured as Finalist in the same category.
Only one Grand Award has been given under both New Buildings Category: Completed Projects – Residential Building and Research & Planning Category.
The Green Building Award is jointly organised by the Professional Green Building Council (PGBC) and the Hong Kong Green Building Council (HKGBC). It aims to provide recognition to building-related projects and organisations with outstanding performance and contributions to sustainability and the built environment.
