The works of several CUHK architecture graduates have been selected as winning entries of The Harbourfront Public Furniture Competition. Organised by The Harbour Office of the Development Bureau (DEVB) and the Harbourfront Commission (HC), the Competition called for creative works which reflect characteristics of Hong Kong and especially that of a vibrant harbourfront.
‘Aqua Cube’, a work by Kenneth Wong Chi Kan (MArch 2011), illustrates the abstract harbourscape of Victoria Harbour through a set of illuminated cubes, highlighting both the aesthetic aspect as well as the historical origin of our city.
‘Wave’, designed by Rachel Lee Shuk Nga (MArch 2013), is a set of modular furniture with customised undulating profile that creates seating and tabletops along the harbourfront, encouraging joyful experience and interaction between park users.
Wong Sau Yin Samuel (MArch 2015), Chan Pak Chuen (MArch 2016) and their team reimagine a puzzle box tailor-made for the harbourfront through ‘VH PUZZLED’, introducing a tinge of playfulness into the different elements, in which users can freely explore and interact with through construction and deconstruction.
‘Victoria Vessel’, a work by Wong Long Hin Nichol (MArch 2019), Chai Kwan Nam (MArch 2019) and their team, is a modern interpretation of traditional Chinese junk boats which once populated Victoria Harbour with its iconic sails. The ‘sail’ shape echoes the fluidity of the harbour while providing playful vertical and horizontal thresholds pragmatically.
Cho Lok Man (BSSc 2019) has incorporated ergonomics design into ‘The Weave Chair’, which intertwines adult-children body dimensions to provide optimum seating comfort for diverse age groups. The furniture is also conceived as a backdrop of social inclusion across generations.
Starting from the end of this year, these works of our graduates will be displayed at the Hoi Fai Road Promenade in Tai Kok Tsui, the Pierside Precinct near Wan Chai Ferry Pier and the Water Sports and Recreation Precinct in Wanchai.
