“The Hidden Depth – Underground Village of Life and Death in Ma On Shan”, a collaboration project of students from the MArch studio “Can Hong Kong Still Make Things”, has been awarded Honorable Mentions at the UIA-HYP CUP 2021 International Student Competition in Architectural Design.

Supervised by Prof. Peter Ferretto, Auyeung Sun Hei (MArch Year 1), Chu Cheuk Yan (MArch Year 2), Cheng Hoi Yau (MArch Year 2), Choi Man Wing (MArch Year 1) envision building an underground village in Ma On Shan providing space for both the living and the dead. The project comprises living units, spiritual space and columbarium, mirroring the mining history of Hong Kong while encouraging sustainable rural planning for the future.

UIA-HYP CUP 2021 International Student Competition in Architectural Design, initiated in 2012, is sponsored by the Union International des Architects (UIA), organised by the School of Architecture of Tianjin University and Urban Environment Design Magazine.
