PhD graduate Chen Yongming has received this year’s Anthony Sutcliffe Dissertation Award with his thesis, "From the Cold War Front Line to the Global City: Everyday Politics in Urbanization of Boat People’s Settlement, Xiamen".
Supervised by Prof. Hendrik Tieben, the thesis incorporates a research methodology that connects the reality of urban development with the complexities of Chinese society, and reveals how spaces have been gradually produced and transformed over time. Taking Xiamen Harbour as a case study, the research discusses how the urbanisation process of a fishing settlement is articulated in parallel with the political transformations in the region, showing the interrelationship between urbanisation, economy and society.
Established by the International Planning History Society (IPHS) and in honour of Anthony Sutcliffe, a founding member of IPHS and Planning Perspectives Journal, the Anthony Sutcliffe Dissertation Award has been recognising outstanding dissertations in the field of planning history since 2014.
