Prof. Peter Ferretto and his team at Condtion_Lab has been awarded the DFA Design for Asia Awards Grand Award for their project, “The Pingtan Book House”.

The Book House, located in the Pingtan village of Hunan Province, is designed to mix play and reading. Having completed the award-winning sister project, Gaobu Book House, in another Dong village years ago, the research team recognised how an architectural project could unite and revitalise the rural community as a whole. They subsequently built another Book House for the Pingtan Primary School, introducing a timber structure that retains traditional Dong vernacular architectural language, inspiring a love of both books and Dong culture in the local community.

Since its launch in 2003, the DFA Design for Asia Awards is the flagship programme of the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC), celebrating design excellence and acknowledging outstanding designs with Asian perspectives.
