In this lecture, Florian Heinzelmann will present SHAU’s recent works demonstrating a 'socio-climatic' design strategy tailored to the local Indonesian context. The socio-climatic concept revolves around a reciprocal relationship between human activities that influence the climate and, conversely, how the climate and, hence, the comfort of a particular area or space impacts potential human interactions. SHAU encourages user engagement and activities by enabling comfortable and welcoming spaces while minimising negative environmental impacts. Realised and upcoming projects will be shown, ranging from Microlibraries and cultural buildings as houses on stilts to projects like RuBIK, a multipurpose theatre in Jakarta and Huma Betang Umai, the Vice-Presidential Palace in Indonesia's new capital IKN. Florian will also touch on how his practice translates into teaching at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture.

Florian Heinzelmann is an architect licensed in the Netherlands who is currently practicing in Indonesia. He is an Associate Professor in Practice at the National University of Singapore, Department of Architecture and has a research background with a Doctorate from the Eindhoven University of Technology.

Florian is co-founder of SHAU in 2009 with offices in Rotterdam (NL), Passau (DE) and Bandung (ID). SHAU is an award-winning practice known for its Microlibraries, which merge community and environmental design aspects, with material experimentation into novel multifunctional typologies. A central theme of SHAU’s work is investigating and applying passive climatic design strategies in tropical climates to facilitate communal activities.

The lectures and seminars will be conducted in English and open to the public. No prior reservation is required.
