As the world faces growing environmental and social challenges in the 21st century, research in architecture and the built environment has become increasingly crucial for developing new paradigms of habitation for a sustainable and equitable future.

The MPhil and PhD in Architecture are research degrees. They are catered for those seeking careers in teaching and research in architecture and its related disciplines, as well as in professional practice and institutions that require specialization in research. Students admitted to the program carry out advanced study and research, with a combination of coursework and individual investigation.

As the world is confronting growing environmental and social challenges in the twenty-first century, research in architecture and the built environment has become increasingly crucial for conceiving new paradigms of habitation for a sustainable and equitable future. The production of new knowledge and translating such knowledge into actions require a strong understanding of theories, refined research skills, and the development of critical perspectives. Pursuing a degree in MPhil and PhD offers these transformative opportunities.

The PhD programme is also an affiliated programme of the Computational Social Science (CSS) Concentration, which provides the students a dual scholarly identity – an expert in Architecture and CSS – so that they will be optimally positioned in the academia and job market. Prospective students who would like to study in the CSS Concentration should apply before commencing their studies at CUHK. Please visit the CSS PhD Fellowship Scheme@CUHK homepage for more information on the concentration.

Research at the School of Architecture

The School of Architecture is home to a multi-disciplinary team of research faculty, who bring together approaches to architectural research from the arts and humanities, social sciences, and sciences. All research carried out in the School shares a common goal of informing design and improving the quality and understanding of the built environment.

Research initiatives in the School are aligned with CUHK’s Strategic Plan 2025 and United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with an emphasis on addressing society’s greatest challenges and contributing to the well-being of the global community. True to its longstanding commitment to creating positive social impact, the School has made significant efforts to establish collaborations with industry, NGOs, government agencies, and academic institutions to leverage design for greater economic, social and environmental sustainability.

Throughout each academic year, the School organizes a range of research activities, including public lectures, discussion forums, symposiums and themed workshops. These events provide students valuable opportunities to broaden their knowledge in cutting-edge research and practice, as well as to engage in emergent debates of the field in cross-cultural and transdisciplinary contexts.
