PhD students Meng Cai and Ran Wang have won the 6th Hong Kong University Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition. Cai has received First Prize with her project “Developing a High-resolution Emission Inventory Tool for Low-Carbon City Management – A Pilot Test in High-density Hong Kong” in the category of Energy, Environmental & Chemical Engineering. Using open urban data, the project has developed a new method to model urban carbon emission inventory in high resolution, generating annual carbon emission maps for the building and transport sectors.
The two students have also been awarded Third Prize in the category of Mathematics & Physics / Mechanics & Control Systems, with their project “Detecting Multi-temporal Land Cover Change and Land Surface Temperature in Pearl River Delta by Adopting Local Climate Zone”. Based on the open-source Local Climate Zone (LCZ) data, the project explores the land cover change and the corresponding land surface temperature change of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region during 2000-15, confirming significant land surface warming and fast urbanisation in the area. The research also facilitates urban planners and government officials to plan a human comfort-oriented city.
Both projects were supervised by Prof Edward Ng and Prof. Chao Ren of the Institute of Future Cities.
The Competition is organised by the Hong Kong New Generation Cultural Association (HKNGCA), a government-recognised charitable organisation. The winning innovation projects, including Cai’s, will represent Hong Kong in the “Challenge Cup” National College Students’ Extracurricular Academic Science and Technology Contest in China.
